Sedation Dentistry Options

For patients who desire dental sedation, Dr. Haddad offers sedation options. While you will remain alert and responsive during treatment, you will enjoy a pain-free experience with little to no memory of the procedure.

  • Oral sedation: Taken in a pill form, oral conscious sedation is taken a few hours before your treatment. This type of sedation will take several hours to wear off and will require you to have an escort to and from your dental appointment.
  • Nitrous oxide: Better known as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is inhaled as a gas. Nitrous oxide takes effect immediately and wears off just as quickly. You will be able to drive yourself to and from your dental appointment.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Are there side effects from dental sedation?

Yes, there are mild side effects you may experience. You’re less likely to have side effects when your sedation method is nitrous oxide. The most common is grogginess. You also may notice dry mouth, periods of amnesia when you’re coming out of sedation, headache, or nausea.

Will I remember my procedure?

You may remember some of it when you have nitrous oxide sedation. With oral conscious sedation, it’s rare that you remember your treatment. While the sedation doesn’t put you to sleep, you may fall asleep during the procedure because you’re so relaxed.

How long does the sedation effect last?

When you get nitrous oxide sedation, the effects wear off pretty directly. It’s the only form of sedation where you can drive yourself to and from the appointment. We give you the proper amount of sedation for your procedure with oral sedation. The effects can last anywhere from 1-6 hours. You’ll still have lingering effects after the procedure and won’t be able to drive yourself.

What can I do after my procedure?

You’ll need to take the remainder of the day off after your procedure. Make sure that you get rest and don’t try to operate any heavy machinery for at least 24 hours. For a few hours after the procedure, have someone with you that can keep an eye on you until the heavier sedation impacts wear off.

Can sedation help alleviate pain as well?

No, sedation helps you to feel relaxed and relieves anxiety. Anesthesia is what relieves pain. We use a combination of the two to ensure that you get an experience that’s comfortable and pain-free.

Am I eligible for sedation dentistry?

We’ll do a full examination and discuss your medical history and current medication. We want to ensure that nothing is going to interfere or create a bad reaction. Most patients will be eligible for sedation, but some health problems may make you ineligible.
